Getting it running, start to finish.
Six steps from an empty computer to a drive that keeps itself in step across everything you own.
Setting up
From a fresh install to two devices.
- 1
Make a drive
Install it on the first device and open it. A PowerDrive folder appears in your home folder on a computer; on a phone you get the file browser.
- 2
Pair the next device
One device shows a code and the other scans it, either way round. The pairing carries the library key, which is the one thing that never travels over a sync.
- 3
Put files in
Save into the PowerDrive folder from any program. The other devices list the file at their next sync and fetch the bytes when they are opened.
- 4
Choose what stays on disk
A folder's ⋮ menu can leave it only in the app: its files go from this computer's disk and come back when opened. On a phone, Keep on this device fetches ahead instead.
- 5
Attach a bucket, if you want one
Per device, point it at an S3 bucket — AWS, MinIO, R2 or Ceph. Your files stay reachable while the other devices are off, and the bucket holds ciphertext under hashed names.
- 6
Remove a device
Remove it once, anywhere, and the rest honour it.
Worth knowing
Things it will do that you might miss.
A few of the parts people find after a week, which are worth finding on day one.
- Space you can set
- Keep a folder on a computer, or leave it in the app so the listing stays and the files arrive when you open them. Each computer can answer differently.
- A searchable PDF from a photograph
- Scans come out straightened, cleaned and with the words laid invisibly over the picture, so you can find a receipt by what it says.
- Everything in one place on the phone
- Your whole drive is listed, and the files you mark travel with you whether you have signal or not.
- Add and remove devices freely
- Hold up a code to add one. Remove one once, anywhere, and the rest agree.
